Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is used in cosmetic formulations for both its color and protective properties. In its traditional form, TiO₂ provides opacity and whiteness, making it useful in creams, foundations, powders, and other makeup products where coverage and a consistent appearance are desired. It also allows for the creation of lighter pastel shades and helps enhance the visual appeal of products. TiO₂ also acts as an inorganic UV filter, its effectiveness as a UV filter, along with its ability to maintain a consistent texture in formulations, makes it a practical ingredient in creams, sticks, and emulsions. In cosmetic formulations, conventional (non-nano) titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is typically used at different concentrations depending on the type of product. For foundations, powders, and creams, TiO₂ is generally incorporated at 1–10%, providing opacity, whiteness, and consistent coverage. In lip products, where only subtle color and opacity are needed, the concentration is lower, usually around 0.5–3%. TiO₂ is generally safe for cosmetic use. Accidental oral exposure, such as from lip products, is minimal and not considered a health risk. Inhalation of powder or sprayable forms should be avoided.
Avoid inhalation: TiO₂ powder can irritate the respiratory tract. Wear a mask or work in a well-ventilated area. Avoid contact with eyes: in case of contact, rinse thoroughly with water. Do not ingest: accidental oral exposure is minimal, but TiO₂ is not a food ingredient. Keep out of reach of children.
