Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) is a colorless, and low-viscosity liquid that is soluble in water and ethanol. Widely used in cosmetic and fragrance formulations. It acts as a solvent, carrier, and fixative, helping essential oils, fragrances, and other active ingredients dissolve evenly and maintain stability over time. In perfumery, DPG slows down the evaporation of scents, enhancing their longevity in colognes, perfumes, and scented products. DPG is also employed in DIY fragrance projects such as incense sticks, oil burners, fragrance beads, and perfumed oils. It allows fragrances to penetrate evenly, ensuring consistent scent release. In cosmetic applications, DPG functions as a humectant and solvent in skincare, haircare, and personal care products. It is compatible with both water- and oil-based formulations and is generally non-allergenic. Reported concentrations in cosmetics range from 0.004% to 50%, depending on the product type, including lotions, shampoos, fragrances, deodorants, and makeup. DPG has been assessed for safety by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) and is considered safe for use in cosmetic formulations at the concentrations commonly used.
