Cocamidopropyl Betaine

Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) is a mild amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut oil and dimethylaminopropylamine. It is widely used in personal care products for its gentle cleansing, rich foam, and conditioning properties, making it ideal for sensitive skin, baby products, and hair care formulations. CAPB is fully water-soluble across a wide pH range and is usually supplied as a 40% active CAPB, which can then be incorporated at 1–30% of the solution in the aqueous phase of shampoos, body washes, bubble baths, liquid soaps, cleansing lotions, intimate washes, and hair conditioners. Thanks to its amphoteric nature, CAPB functions as a co-surfactant, softening harsher anionic surfactants such as Sodium Laureth Sulfate while enhancing foam volume, texture, and stability. It also improves hair softness, shine, manageability, and volume, and provides antistatic effects for both hair and skin. CAPB can slightly increase the viscosity of formulations, giving products a smooth, pleasant texture. It is compatible with anionic, non-ionic, and cationic surfactants, making it highly versatile for DIY formulations. CAPB dissolves in water, ethanol, and isopropanol, but not in mineral oils. Safety studies confirm that CAPB is generally non-irritating at typical use levels, with rinse-off products being safe at concentrations up to 10–12% active CAPB, and leave-on products not exceeding 3% active. For DIY use, CAPB is ideal as a surfactant, providing gentle cleansing, rich lather, and conditioning benefits while maintaining a mild profile suitable for all skin types.

Avoid contact with eyes. Can cause irritation; rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs Possible sensitivity: Although mild, CAPB can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals, often due to impurities (e.g. amidoamine or DMAPA). Perform a patch test before use, especially for sensitive skin. Keep out of children's reach
